Aside from the work of most letterpress designers and printers being down-right beautiful, the majority of those folks are small, independent businesses. If you do everything possible to patronize indie shops like I do and love quality stationery, this is a match made in heaven.
Letterpress work is one of the yummiest printing processes ever invented. It has a wonderful tactile quality to it that’s far more satisfying than thermography or engraving. The technology is such that letterpressing is inevitably done is small batches, giving the work a limited-edition feel. It isn’t an entirely precise technique, so the work has a hand-made quality to it that hints at the possibility of finding a slight imperfection that will make your card one-of-a-kind. And, in this day of sleek design and rampant contemporary aesthetics, letterpress work has an aura of Old World sensibility and charm.
If you haven’t had the joy of receiving a letterpress card, buy yourself one for kicks. You’ll find yourself wanting to frame it! And if you have a favorite letterpress source already, comment on this post and share it with me. I’d love to check it out!
